AUNG SAN SUU KYI’S FATE TO BE DECIDED ON FRIDAY

Aung San Suu Kyi, the world renowned democratic leader is awaiting the verdict on her trail on the last day of this month on Friday. The brave lady has already declared that she is ready to face any adverse results. The special court dealing with the verdict is set in the premises of notorious high security Insein prison at Yangon where she is currently detained.

It has been 13 long years since this world’s foremost human rights leader has been arrested by the Myanmar Government. She has led her democratic party to a landslide victory in a rare election held in Myanmar nearly two decades ago. Myanmar’s military rulers have since then clamped down restrictions on her freedom. World leaders and human rights groups have repeatedly appealed to the Myanmar government to release her, but to no avail.

The world is waiting eagerly for the verdict to be out on Friday. It is more or less certain that it will be a guilty verdict since the Myanmar court has a history of never going against the wishes of the its military. The media were never allowed inside the court room when the trail was going on although some foreign diplomats were allowed inside as independent observers.

The repeated calls for her unconditional release from world over has been obstinately denied by the Myanmar militia. The whole trail itself was nothing but a farce show of democracy in a purely autocratic government. It is a shame that even in these modern times of human rights awareness, the world can do nothing but wait with bated breath for the decision on the fate of Aung San Suu Kyi, world’s leading proponent of democracy resting in the hands of a few autocrat’s in a minor country.
